A2 – Supportive Decision Making, Beyond The Buzzword Into A Construct For Its Application In
Probate Conservatorships

Supportive Decision Making (SDM) is now the law in California. If you haven’t already, it’s a matter of
time before you will have to deal with a supporter assisting one of your elderly clients with their
decision-making. In this presentation you will learn exactly what SDM is and the proper role of a
supporter. Next, we will explore choosing the right supporter, what training is available to them, and
how to document the supporter’s role with a SDM agreement. Then we will dive into the medical
aspects of applying SDM to elders with dementia and other major neurocognitive disorders, including
the impact of the degenerative nature of cognitive deficits in the elderly. With this knowledge, we will
then explore the application of SDM in conservatorships where accusations of undue influence abound,
as well as in several common situations involving major life decisions for elders like placement, driving,
visitation with difficult family members, among others.
