B1 – Keeping Up With Changes To Public Benefits

There were major changes in the law in 2024 to Medi-Cal and SSI. There are more anticipated for 2025. There will be additional upcoming changes in the law for ABLE accounts. This program will go over each change in detail and discuss how this affects special needs trust administration and how to get the most benefits to our clients.

Leslie Yarnes Sugai is a partner in the Los Gatos law firm of Sugai & Sudweeks, LLP. Ms. Sugai has been designated a Certified Specialist in Estate Planning, Trust, and Probate Law by The State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization. She is a Certified Elder Law Attorney by the National Elder Law Foundation. She practices in the areas of estate planning, trust and estate administration, Medi-Cal, special needs planning, and conservatorships. Ms. Sugai earned her B.A. degree from the University of California at Santa Cruz and her J.D. degree from University of Pacific, McGeorge School of Law.

Sheri Sudweeks is an attorney and partner at Sugai & Sudweeks, LLP. Her focus areas of law include conservatorships, guardianships, fiduciary representation, special needs planning, trust reformation, and estate planning. She has been recognized by the State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization as a Certified Specialist for Estate Planning, Trust, and Probate Lawyers. Ms. Sudweeks is a former professor of law and a guest lecturer on elder law and special needs issues, both locally and nationally. She is a contributing author to Continuing Education of the Bar’s (CEB) California Guardianship Practice and a speaker for CEB seminars.
