The panel will utilize their combined experience to demonstrate how special needs clients and their families constitute a unique culture. Professional Fiduciaries who familiarize themselves with disability culture and embrace cultural humility can work well with these clients. Through a review of the literature and case studies, we will illustrate best practices that can instill confidence in the Fiduciary working with special needs clients.

Jeanne was born and raised in South Africa, has travelled the world extensively and appreciates diversity in all individuals and cultures. Jeanne brings real estate expertise from her prior experience as a realtor and is a specialist in property management, property acquisitions and sales. Jeanne has volunteered at the LA LGBT Center and Union Station Homeless Services in Pasadena.

Brenda Shorkend is a Certified Aging Life Care Professional®/Geriatric Care Manager, with decades of experience advocating for older people and people with special needs, disabilities and their families. She has a background in Rehabilitation Psychology and is a Fellow of the Leadership Academy of the Aging Life Care Association.
She has strong working relationships with leading professionals, and in addition to working directly with clients, she conducts 730 evaluations and in-depth assessments for Professional Fiduciaries and attorneys. Brenda is the past Chair of the Aging Life Care Association’s Standards Committee and on the Board of JLA Special Needs Trust.

Joseph Lee has been practicing probate since his child was first diagnosed with autism, in 2007. When he realized how underserved that population was, he decided that he was going to start a practice to fill those unmet needs. Today, Joe’s practice includes estate planning with an emphasis on families that have special needs issues, conservatorships, and it has grown into a general probate practice.
In this capacity, not only does he help those families that have children with disabilities, but typical families as well. He represents Professional Fiduciaries as well as lay persons in all aspects of Probate, Trust Administration and Conservatorships.
